- Read, read, read whatever you enjoy reading. This tells you what you like to read if someone else writes it and it’s a pretty good guess that you’d like to read it if you wrote it.
- Take those stories you read and change them into the story you’d write if you’d been the author. Change the setting or switch the characters from what they were in the original story to what you’d like them to be or any other change that will make it more your kind of story.
- Look at the changed story. Is it still the same genre as the original story or have you changed it into some other genre? Whatever you did — whatever genre it now belongs in — is most likely the one you should pursue.
