Where is the beginning?

Where to start a story? How to begin the journey?

Believe it or not, there’s a specific answer to this question, one that many, possibly most, would-be writers don’t know.

Start where and when the main character begins to interact with whatever he/she must deal with in order to get to the end of the story.

That’s the place — and the only place — to start and it works best if there’s a lot of action and dialog to draw readers into the story. If there’s not much going on then do your best to inject some action and/or dialog into the scene because that’s what’ll keep readers reading.

When you reach the end of the book, check back and make sure the end shows the reader what happened after the main character started that trek.
